Hello all, first post. I am aware that the ODNR stocks rainbows in November, but I haven't seen any confirmation of that for 2025. Is there something I don't know?

Understanding the Context

I plan to wait until later in December to fish it anyway, but only if they are actually stocking it. Thanks in advance for any... The stocking of walleye fry is akin to stocking pheasant. The mortality rate begins right after being released.

Key Insights

I have been present for the the pheasant stocking and was shocked by how these birds behaved. It was like every predator was on high alert. Just finished building & stocking a pond in the last 2 years, size is 1 acre + and is 19'-0 at the deepest. Got lucky and a contractor needed fill dirt for a project near our farm, so it was done for free. All of our watershed is farmground.

Final Thoughts

We built a drain basin that runs into the pond to eliminate silting of the pond. Walleye stocking around here is an absolute joke. Even in the spring you need a boat to get em (one fish a week off 224 @ Berlin doesnt count) and even then mosquito and berlin are the only lakes worth trying. This new stocking plan makes a good degree of sense, but skipping Punderson--one of the only inland lakes that can support a year round trout fishery--doesnt. If the state is going to invest in trout stocking, why would they skip the one place that might actually have something of a viable fishery? It has for decades.

Stocking predominately fall run fish makes it seem worse, since we haven't experienced good consistent fall flows for a while. Noticed that Michigan's steelhead take has been reduced since covid, so not enough extra to go around to other states, including Ohio. Our target stocking rate for saugeye fingerlings is 100/acre. These fish are raised in hatchery ponds for about a month and then stocked at 1-1.5โ€ lengths in mid to late-May.
